New Town in the OffingThe Kitwe City Council has stepped up efforts to create a new town centre across Kafue River to decongest the central business district.

The Zambian Government will spend US10million on constructing the Mufuchani Bridge across the Kafue River linking east to the west bank and opening up of the 770 square meters of land for development of a modern town.

The establishment of the new town centre across the Kafue River is also aimed at creating more space in the fast-growing Copperbelt city. Kitwe Town Clerk Mr. Bornwell Luanga said recently that the local authority had already secured a council resolution to start formulating the integrated development plan for the new town centre.

Mr. Bornwell said they are engaging the Ministry of Local Government and Housing to assist because this is a big venture which needs massive infrastructure development such as roads, sewer systems and others.

Mr. Luanga was optimistic the planned creation of the new town across Kafue River would be realized soon especially that Kitwe was seeing a number of investors coming to invest in new buildings and real estate, which was the answer to the current shortage of housing units in the country.
