Brits Water Treatment Works (BWTW) has been allocated US $33.20m for its upgrading to help end water shortages in Majakaneng. Shortages had resulted in service delivery protests in the recent past.

According to the Media liaison officer from the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) Sputnik Ratau, DWS is working with the local municipality of Madibeng to address the water crisis in the region.

Upgrading works on BWTW will include replacement of sand filters installed by Magalies Water last year. This will ensure that the Brits Water Treatment Works has an additional production capacity of 20MI/d.

Civil works on phase 1 of the project, being undertaken by DWS, has already begun according to Ratau, who added that electrical and mechanical works will be done by two Professional Service Providers (PSP’S). Phase 1 is expected to be complete by August 2015 with work expected to begin immediately on phase 2. The entire project will be completed on the financial year 2017/ 2018.

He said continuous supply of water to the Majakaneng community, which had been interrupted by vandalism and leakages in supply system, will be restored since the Department of Water and Sanitation has allocated the Madibeng local municipality with US $0.10m to end the challenges.
