Johannesburg infrastructure is set to have a new face following a massive upgrade of Soweto Freeway, M1 and M2 highways that has been rolled out by the City of Johannesburg. The South African city will spend US $28.32m for the project that is set to boost accessibility of municipal roads in the area. The road construction will be carried out by Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).
Johannesburg infrastructure upgrade is part of the US $8,54bn infrastructure investment in the city in a span of 10 years which will also see the design of the metropolitan is changed in order to ease congestion and flooding on the roads.
Additionally, US $11.80m has been set aside to for construction and rehabilitation of bridges that are in the city.
According to the Executive Mayor for City of Johannesburg, Councillor Parks Tau, a budget of US $0.11bn has been set aside for works on roads, storm water infrastructure and bridges for the financial year 2015- 2016.
Tau noted that the projects are in line with the holistic strategy to refurbish infrastructure in the City for a better life for the city residents.
Under the leadership of Tau in the recent years, the South African city launched a number of initiatives to ensure its growth strategy is on the principles of transit-oriented development.
On inspection of 814 bridges in the City, JRA found out that US$ 1.17bn would be required to rehabilitate construct and expand some of the bridges.
