Rehabilitation of major highway in Nigeria has kicked off, Godwin Eke, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos has announced. The Apapa-Oshodi Expressway  will be reconstructed including federal roads in Lagos.

In early April this year, Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) announced its commitment to commence the repair works on the bad portions this month. According to Ayotunde Sodeinde, LSPWC Special Adviser/Chief Executive Officer extensive repairs on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

Julius Berger the proposed project contractor has already submitted the cost estimates for the repairs of the Ilasamaja/Berliet/Iyana Itire sections of the Apapa/Oshodi expressway. However, the Federal Ministry of Worksis waiting for approval of the 2016 budget to begin the rehabilitation works.

Additionally, all failed sections of the highway will receive priority attention. On the other hand, the road users on the Apapa-Oshodi expressway have been appealed to exercise patience as the government is concerned about the hardship faced by motorists due to the bad portions.

The government will as well commence the rehabilitation of all federal roads across the country. Several proposals and designs on how to fix the deplorable highway and other federal roads in Lagos has been launched. The proposals are however, tied to the 2016, 2017 and the 2018 budgets.

Nonetheless, as soon as the budget is passed, mobilization of the site contractors to begin repairs on the critical sections will immediately begin especially on the Ilasamaja/Berliet/Iyana Itire sections. Boulders have been frequently used to fill some of the craters on the main carriageway on the Oshodi bound carriageway of the highway around Iyana Itire bus stop. Crushed stones have also been used to fill various potholes around the Ilasa and Berliet bus stop areas.

Apapa-Oshodi Expressway highway in Lagos leads to the two ports which serve as gateways to the nation’s economy.
