The Nigerian Federal Government has just recently kicked off the 700km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Construction project along with the maintenance works of critical bridges located in Lagos.

As stated by the minister of works in the country in the event of the handover of the first phase of the major Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Construction project, the federal government would not give room to variation that arises from delays or slow pace of the construction works once the overall mobilization of resources of the project had been done.

Contractor of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Construction

This Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway runs through a total of nine states with two of its spurs leading all the way to the Northern States in the country. According to a statement that was issued by the special adviser media to the minister, Orji Uchenna, revealed the first phase of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Construction project will be constructed in a concrete pavement that shall comprise of 47.47 kilometers dual carriageway had already been handed over to the contractor i.e. Hitech Construction Company Ltd.

The minister who was accompanied by the Federal Ministry of Works, controller in charge of Lagos City State, Engineer O.I Kesha, made emphasis on the need of all the assigned contractors who are in charge of all the road projects of the federal government to deliver as scheduled. He also applauded Hitech Construction Company Nigeria Ltd for their quality and speedy delivery of the tasks assigned to them.

Current Status of the Project

According to Uchenna, they had finished some filling of the 1.3 kilometers from the day that this project was awarded to them. This clearly indicates the speed that they are going to put into this project. In just a period of two weeks, the company has managed to mobilize a lot of equipment for dredging and currently they have managed to recover a total of 1.3 kilometers of the first section of the phase.

The minister also paid a visit to the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Construction project sites located at the Drive Ikoyi, the Third Mainland bridge top deck, underwater, Eddo Bridge, and lastly the Carter Bridge showed the determination of Nigeria’s federal government to conduct a general comprehensive rehabilitation of the various bridges which are very critical links between the Mainland region and Lagos Island. The repairs that will be carried out shall be done not only at the top of the bridge but also under the bridge i.e at the Third Mainland Bridge.

Third Mainland Bridge Rehabilitation

The Third Mainland Bridge has about three to four crucial elements that need to be rehabilitated:

  • The deck which is approximately 11 kilometers x two.
  • The dual carriage way inclusive of the ramps. It has been done by the CCECC. They have done a very nice job but have not yet finished.
