TriMet begins Modernization Of Red MAX Extension and Reliability Improvements Project. TriMet will remodel MAX station located at PDX and build a two-thirds mile long second track near the airport. This phase of the Red MAX Extension and Reliability Improvements Project will include  extending the Red Line west 10 stations to Hillsboro. 20 more maintenance between transit center and the airport is also expected to be completed. Some of those tasks include repairs, inspections, and equipment installation, rail welding and replacement

The Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) stated Red MAX Extension and Reliability Improvements Project with intentions to increase the reliability of the entire MAX light rail system between Portland international Airport and Beaverton Transit Center.

Connection to the Portland International Airport will be shut down for more than four months. Those whom will be using this route are advised to use shuttle buses which will provide services between Gateway transit center and airport.

“The shuttles will operate between the Gateway Transit Center and Portland International Airport approximately every 15 minutes to ferry passengers around the outage,” TriMet said.

Because they are smaller, some buses can be busier than regular MAX trains, especially if people are traveling with lots of suitcases. This can happen at unexpected times, for example after planes have landed.

“If you’ve already booked your airline tickets and are planning to take the MAX to PDX, don’t worry, we’re still here for you with shuttles to Gateway, PDX and every closed station in between. If so “When traveling to and from the airport, we recommend planning at least 30 minutes more time for the journey or longer if there’s traffic disruptions on Interstate 205,” TriMet said on Monday, June 12.

Red Line trains will continue to operate west of the Gateway Transit Center for the duration of the Red MAX Extension and Reliability Improvements Project,  But trains between the Beaverton Transit Center and the Gateway Transit Center will arrive less frequently, every 30 minutes instead of every 15.

Red Line service for PDX is expected to resume mid-October.
