The first phase of the Noida International Airport is likely to be completed and open for commercial flights by the end of 2024. According to Union Minister for Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia, trial flights are expected four-to-six months prior.
This phase of the airport is spread over an area of over 1,300 hectares. It features a 3,900-metre-long runway and a terminal building with an annual passenger handling capacity of 1.2 crores.

According to Scindia, the start of operation of Noida International Airport will open the doors of prosperity in the surrounding areas. It will also open the possibilities of employment and self-employment for the local residents.
Acquisition of land for the second phase to begin in July
Meanwhile, the acquisition of approximately 1,180 hectares of land for the second phase of the project is expected to begin in July.
In preparation, the UP government has issued a notification to set up townships in Falaida Cut and Modal Pur. These townships will be set up on approximately 230 hectares of land. They will be used to rehabilitate the villagers from whom the land will be acquired for the second phase of Noida International Airport.
Moreover, the government has issued a notification for people to file objections. The objections, if any, will be addressed after which the process of handing out compensation and taking possession of the land will begin.
The land will be acquired in six villages. These villages are Karauli Bangar, Dayanatpur, Kuraib, Ranhera, Mundrah, and Birampur. Approximately 13,000 families are likely to be affected. The second phase of Noida International Airport will require a total of 1,365 hectares, 183 hectares are already available.
Noida International Airport project overview
Noida Jewar International Greenfield Airport, also known as Delhi Noida International Airport or Jewar Airport project is being developed through a public-private partnership model (PPP) near the town of Jewar in Gautam Buddh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, India.
With the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) as the project implementing agency on behalf of the government of Uttar Pradesh, the Noida International Greenfield Airport project is being implemented in four phases.
The first phase, which involves capital investment to the tune of US$ 730.5M or its thereabouts, will see the construction of one 3900m runway, one 101,590sqm passenger terminal, 28 aircraft parking stands, and other airport support facilities on a 1,334 hectares piece of land.
The airport, following the completion of its initial phase, will have the capacity to serve 12 million passengers a year and it will allow the diversion of a portion of the IGI airport’s passenger traffic.
In the second to the fourth phases, the Noida International Greenfield Airport will be expanded into a 7,200 acres facility with a total of 6 runways and the capacity to handle over 100 million people per year.
This expansion will make the airport to be number one on the list of the airports with the highest number of runways in India, and rank it among the top ten airports with the highest number of runways in the world behind the eight-runway Chicago–O’Hare and the seven runway Dallas/Fort Worth airports.
Since 2019, there has been a proposal to construct two additional runways as part of future expansion and if there will be enough land, to bring the total to eight. The proposal has been given the green light by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The project was proposed by the Uttar Pradesh chief minister Rajnath Singh as a greenfield Taj International and Aviation Hub (TIAH) and it was set to be constructed at Jewar village near Greater Noida, adjacent to the Yamuna Expressway.
Fast forward, to June 2015, the civil aviation ministry cleared the proposal for the new airport, which would now be known as the Noida International Greenfield Airport, to be set up on 2,200 acres of land.
In June, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) cleared the Noida International Greenfield Airport project.
In August, YEIDA commenced financing for the project.
Flughafen Zurich AG was selected as the preferred bidder for a 40-year concession to design, develop and operate Jewar Noida International Airport.
In August, Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL) commenced preliminary works for the implementation of the project.
In September YIAPL received the final approval for its master plan for the Jewar Noida International Airport development project.
In early November, Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), which is a special-purpose vehicle formed to develop and operate the Noida international airport in Jewar, announced that it had completed 18% work on the boundary wall of the project.
At the same time, the company announced the possibility that the Uttar Pradesh government represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi would lay the foundation stone of the mega project by the end of the month (November 2021).
Late November 2021
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of Noida International Greenfield Airport that is also known as Jewar Airport marking the start of construction of the fifth international airport in Uttar Pradesh and what will be the largest airport in Asia and the fourth largest airport in the world upon completion.
Indian Oil Skytanking Ltd. (IOSL) was awarded a 30-year concession to design, build, and operate fuel infrastructure, including a multi-user fuel farm and hydrant system for the Noida International Airport.
Particularly IOSL will build facilities that will include ‘10,000 m3’ of fuel-storage tanks with inbuilt flexibility to increase the capacity rapidly as per air traffic demand and support by an underground hydrant system connecting all aircraft stands, remote and contact, with fuel pipelines.
Late December 2021
Uttar Pradesh government approved the social impact assessment report for the second phase of the Noida International Airport project that envisages setting up a third runway, and commercial maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) of the aircraft center, which shall ensure the service worthiness of an aircraft thanks to the planned facilities for inspection and maintenance.
Reportedly, the process to acquire land in Karauli Bangar, Dayanatpur, Kureb, Ranhera, Mundhera, and Nagla Hukum Singh villages for this phase would begin in January 2022.
“From January we shall organize camps at the six villages on January 7th, 8th, and 10th to take the consent of the farmers, who are likely to be affected by the land acquisition process. The suggestions and objections of those opposing the project shall be noted down for suitable remedial action,” said Balram Singh, additional district magistrate (land acquisition), Gautam Budh Nagar.
The engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for the Noida International Airport Project has officially been awarded by the Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL) to TATA Projects Ltd, one of India’s fastest-growing engineering, procurement & construction companies with experience and expertise in executing large, complex industrial and urban infrastructure projects.
The company was selected out of three shortlisted teams after it displayed the best experience in the design, procurement, and construction of large infrastructure projects. The Chief Executive Officer of Yamuna International Airport, Mr. Christoph Schnellmann expressed that they are pleased to have partnered with TATA Projects for the EPC contract for the Noida International Airport Project.
He revealed that the project has commenced its next phase which will observe a rapid increase in the construction activities on site adding that together with TATA Projects, they will deliver a runway, and passenger terminal, alongside other airport infrastructure. Mr. Christoph also stated that they aim to promote, strengthen and enable an all-inclusive sustainable development of the aviation ecosystem in the country.
The Noida International Airport Project will combine a mix of Swiss technology and efficiency with Indian hospitality and culture to develop a modern, user-friendly design that is majorly inspired by India. For the passenger terminal, it is confirmed to encompass certain parameters such as digital services, passenger flows, and absolute commitment to minimal environmental impact.
The project aims to also develop a digital airport in the country that will enable personalized services and contactless travel for business travelers as well as families and the elderly. By 2024, the airport projects to reach a capacity of 12 million passengers annually.
Noida International Airport (NIA) developer, Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL) has selected the projects Master System Integrator (MSI) consultant. ICAD Holding Ltd, a private limited company from London, United Kingdom is the selected consultant.
The company, which is a pioneer in large-scale technology integration, airport integration, and mega projects, will support NIA with the systems integration design, integration program management, and integration of ICT and Airport Systems. ICAD will also lead the core airport systems implementation and integration.
This appointment will enable Noida International Airport (NIA) to set a new benchmark as a digital airport. Through the implementation of state-of-the-art technology, the airport will provide a seamless and mostly contactless flow. This will be archived through the use of integrated systems, services, and technologies such as indoor navigation, passenger flow management, and data analytics.
The digital environment to be set up at NIA includes paperless digital processing. This will be applied across all checkpoints in line with the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation’s DigiYatra Policy.

2nd phase of the acquisition of land for Noida International Airport begins
The second phase of the acquisition of land for the construction of Noida Jewar International Airport has begun. This comes following the first phase in which a total of 1334 hectares of land was acquired.
Under Phase II of the project, around 1365 hectares of land will be acquired affecting approximately 6 villages. The 6 villages are Karauli Bangar, Dayanatpur, Kuraib, Ranhera, Mudhreh, and Birampur.
Of the 1365 hectares, about 159 will be from Karauli Bangar, 145 from Dayanatpur, 326 from Kuraib, 458 from Ranhera, 46 from Mundhreh, and around 49 from Birampur.
So far, 1650 farmers out of a total of 5000 have consented to give their land for the Noida International Airport project.
Phase 1 of the Noida Jewar International Greenfield Airport project in India is 25% complete
The first phase of the Noida Jewar International Greenfield Airport project in India is 25% complete. This was revealed by the chief secretary DS Mishra.
Reportedly, Tata Projects which was awarded the engineering, procurement, and construction contract for the project last year has been carrying out the construction of the terminal building, runway, and air traffic control.
Currently, the concreting work of the terminal piers is on course while the land for the runway is being leveled. The number of machinery and workforce has also been increased at the Noida Jewar International Greenfield Airport site. Furthermore, matters related to CISF, customs, communications, navigation and surveillance systems for air traffic management (CNSATM) and security for the airport have been discussed.
A discussion on the requirements for the construction of offices of various departments like immigration, customs, security forces, airport authority, and health has also been done. The requirements in question include where in the airport premises the offices should be built and how much land they require.
The Implementation of this phase of the Noida Jewar International Greenfield Airport project is expected to be completed before September 2024.
Plans are underway for the start of the acquisition of land for the subsequent phases
Meanwhile, plans are underway for the start of the acquisition of land for the subsequent phases. The land acquisition for the second phase in particular has been approved. This phase calls for the acquisition of an area of 1,365 hectares, of which 1,185 hectares are owned by farmers that will have to be compensated.
In this regard, the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) has nearly doubled the proposed allocation for the project from last year, allocating Rs 805 crore in the financial year 2023-24. These monies will not only cover the acquisition of land for Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the Noida Jewar International Greenfield Airport project but also other infrastructure development around the facility.
