The ongoing construction of the Fask dam approximately 30 kilometres south of the city of Guelmim, southern Morocco, is reportedly 72 per cent complete and on schedule. The hydraulic project the construction of which began in 2018 at an estimated cost of 1.5 billion dirhams, has an 80 million cubic meter reservoir.

According to statements released by Hamza Cherqui, the site’s director of construction works, the project would be completed by the end of 2023  upon which it would help to better irrigate agricultural land, ensure the supply of drinking water in Guelmim and its region, improve the local water table, especially in view of the Kingdom’s difficult climatic conditions due to a decline in rainfall, and protect the Guelmim region against floods.

Socio-economic impacts of the Fask dam project to the people of Guelmim and its region

Once the construction work  is completed, Imane Nechat, the engineer overseeing the construction of the Fask dam, stressed that the project will have major socio-economic benefits for the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, while noting the strategies utilized to speed up the project’s completion.

It is said that the local people are delighted about the completion of the project, which demonstrates the qualitative leap in infrastructure that Morocco’s Saharan regions have achieved, improving the region’s appeal to investors.
