Crosland Southeast has started working on phase I of its Commonwealth project in Plaza Midwood, which is to be developed at the current location of Central Square, between Central and Pecan avenues. Image renderings showing some major redevelopment in the heart of Plaza Midwood have been released. The groundbreaking for this development is slated for this fall and this project will be developed by both Crosland Southeast and Nuveen Real Estate, on 12 acres of land that will feature about 400 apartment units, several restaurants, a boutique hotel, as well as retail and office spaces.
Construction of this Commonwealth project will be carried out in two phases. Phase one will showcase the first mid-rise office building in Plaza Midwood, which will be made up of over 150,000 square feet of Class A office space. Surrounding the mid-rise office building will be retail and restaurant spaces, covering about 100,000 square feet. Phase One of the project is expected to be completed by Spring of 2024. Phase two’s design of the Commonwealth project will bring an extra 250,000 square feet of Class A office space along with a hotel and this second phase is proposed to kick off next year.

Commonwealth project in Plaza Midwood will be connected to the Central and Pecan avenues via a street for walking, as well as transit from the gold and silver lines of the light rail. The designs for the area surrounding the mid-rise office building in Plaza Midwood, will include green landscaping and vast art installations, where neighborhood programs will also take place.
Some of the old architecture of the area will also be preserved and incorporated into the Commonwealth project development; this includes The vintage Cole Manufacturing Company, a historic brick mill building, that will undergo interior remodeling and renovations to feature a mix of the old and new architecture.
The senior vice president of Mixed-use Investment at Crosland Southeast, Bobby Speir, pointed out that the goal throughout the design process was to exhibit a natural extension of the neighborhood. He also mentioned that the Commonwealth project is aimed at creating a thriving capital for innovators, artists, and tastemakers alike.
