Maryland DOT has chosen Tutor Perini for the implementation of the Capital Beltway project in Washington. The project comprises the creation and construction of toll lanes along about 14 miles of I-495 and I-270 in the Washington, D.C. area.

This initial stage of construction is expected to cost between $3.75 billion and $4.25 billion, according to a state body, and the total cost is predicted to be at least $11 billion. The public-private collaboration, which spans Maryland and Virginia, is managed by Accelerate Maryland Partners, a private corporation backed by Transurban and Macquarie Capital. Transurban, located in Melbourne, Australia, is the owner and operator of toll roads in Northern Virginia.

Before starting construction, AM Partners must secure a 50-year agreement with the Maryland DOT to fund, build, and run the lanes in exchange for the majority of toll revenue. The project received critical approval from the Federal Highway Administration last month. The stalled project has gained speed thanks to that choice and the hiring of Tutor Perini, but obstacles still stand in the way.

Gov. Larry Hogan of Maryland has been a strong supporter of the project, but many people are not as enthused for a variety of reasons. Before he leaves office in January, Hogan wants the Board of Public Works to approve a deal with Transurban, according to Maryland Matters.
