Phase I of the South Station project in Boston which began in 2020 is gradually nearing its completion timeline. Despite the fact that the construction is still ongoing, a ribbon-cutting event was hosted recently at the site. This event took place against the backdrop of the 51-story tower that’s currently being developed as part of the project.

This initial phase of the South Station project is intended to expand the bus terminal hub by over 50%. In addition, the plan also involves remodeling the outdoor concourse area to completely cover all tracks and platforms. This project is intended to create an architecturally significant gateway into the city, linking the train station and bus terminal. On top of that, it also includes a 51-story tower which upon completion will become the tallest building in Boston.

Governor Charlie Baker said the expenditure for South Station’s transportation center is between $100 to $150 million. But, he said these expenses don’t cover construction costs associated with the tower. Presently, the train station and bus terminal are two separate buildings, which makes connections between them difficult and inconvenient for commuters. However, the Governor mentioned that the South Station redevelopment project would bring about significant improvements and a better traveling experience.

Development plans and the timeline for the South Station  project

Governor Baker expressed his gratitude for the support provided by Hines, City officials, community members, and other partners. Hines is the developer of the 51-story, 1,020,000-square-foot building that will redefine Boston’s skyline, upon completion in 2025. Meanwhile, Pelli Clarke & Partners handled the building’s designs. The design plan features a state-of-the-art office and residential tower positioned directly above the South Station development project. For this initial phase, the building will deliver 670,000 square feet of rentable office space and 166 luxury residential units. Additionally, it features several amenity spaces and over 500 parking lots.

According to the developers’ press representative, Maddy Berry, the bus terminal expansion is scheduled for completion in 2023. However, she said the redesigned train station platform is expected to be completed by 2025.
