Simbarashe Gomo, Mashonaland West provincial road engineer has revealed that four bridges and a portion of the Hellsgate Mkanga Road in the Mana Pools Park in Zimbabwe are being reconstructed approximately, three weeks after flooding wrecked the infrastructure.

Heavy rains have reportedly destroyed bridges and highways in the northern part of the nation, where the Mana Pools National Park is located on the Zambezi River’s southern bank, preventing access to the famous UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its spectacular beauty and diverse range of visitor activities.

Scope of the project

The scope of work according to Eng. Gomo includes restoring all damaged bridge approaches and road sections along the 31-kilometer Hellsgate Mkanga Road. The contractor Concrete Masters (Pvt) Ltd, has already arrived on-site and is expected to carry out the project for a period of 45 days or its thereabouts.

The bridges in question are the one-kilometer Marongora Bridge, the 2.3 kilometers Chemutsi Bridge, the 15 kilometers Rumwa Bridge, and the 31 kilometers Rukomeshi Bridge.

Reviving income at Mana Pools Park in Zimbabwe

The project for the reconstruction of the damaged bridges and roads would make the resort region more accessible to visitors. The current state of the infrastructure has reportedly limited access to the world heritage site, cutting income for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks), which is still fighting to recover from the consequences of Covid-19-related travel restrictions and financial cuts from the national government.
