A $1 billion transformation of Appliance Park in Louisville, Kentucky, will expand domestic appliance manufacturing across three buildings and bring high-output dryer production from Mexico to the United States.
The investment will reshape Buildings 1, 2 and 5 at the 750-acre manufacturing campus and establish Appliance Park as the largest home appliance manufacturing site in the United States by production output, employment and campus footprint, according to GE Appliances and the IUE-CWA.
The project centers on a major conversion of Building 5, where GE Appliances plans to invest more than $400 million to create a high-output dryer manufacturing operation. Refrigeration production at the building will end in early 2027, followed by an approximately nine- to 12-month transformation before dryer production begins in late 2027.
GE Appliances will keep employees on its payroll during the Building 5 transition and says the retooling will not involve layoffs. Workers will have opportunities to move into new and expanded manufacturing positions as production increases across the campus in 2027.
Building 5 Conversion Leads the Expansion
The Building 5 conversion represents the largest component of the newly announced investment. The project will move dryer production from Mexico to Louisville and concentrate high-output laundry manufacturing at Appliance Park.
The transition will change the building’s manufacturing role while GE Appliances continues refrigerator production elsewhere in its U.S. network. The company will continue producing millions of refrigerators each year at facilities in Decatur, Alabama, and Selmer, Tennessee.
The Louisville project also includes approximately $112 million for Building 1. That investment will add new manufacturing equipment and redesign existing washer and dryer platforms.
Together, the new Building 1 and Building 5 investments will complement a previously announced $490 million expansion in Building 2.
Building 2 to Produce Front-Load Washers and Combos
The $490 million Building 2 investment will support production of front-load washers and combination washer/dryers. Production from the expanded operation will begin in 2027.
The three-building program will expand Appliance Park’s laundry manufacturing capabilities while bringing additional production into Kentucky.
Once the new manufacturing footprint reaches full implementation, the investment will help secure about 4,700 production jobs at the campus.
Appliance Park Expansion Builds on Earlier Investments
The latest project adds to a larger investment program at the Louisville campus. GE Appliances says it has committed $6.5 billion to U.S. manufacturing since 2016, including more than $3.5 billion already invested in U.S. operations and another $3 billion announced in 2025 for investment over five years.
Appliance Park has operated as a manufacturing center since 1953. The campus serves as GE Appliances’ global headquarters and includes manufacturing, engineering, technology, design, distribution and warehouse operations.
The latest investment will expand an established manufacturing campus rather than create a new greenfield facility. The construction work will focus on retooling existing buildings, installing new equipment and redesigning production platforms.
The expansion at Appliance Park reflects a broader push to strengthen critical U.S. infrastructure as industries invest in domestic production and capacity. That investment extends beyond manufacturing facilities, with Washington State also advancing a new cable landing station designed to expand international connectivity and provide additional infrastructure for the Pacific Northwest’s growing digital economy.
