The groundbreaking of a $15.4 million Hoover performing arts center took place recently in Hoover City’s School district, Alabama. Consequently, several dozen people were gathered at the project’s site, near Buccaneer Stadium to mark the start of its construction phase. Hoover High school intends to build this new 36,000-square-foot facility to replace its current theatre, which has only 270 seats.

According to the school officials, about 47% of the students at Hoover High are into some type of fine arts. They also highlighted the importance of having an auditorium with enough seats to accommodate a full grade level. Especially since the school currently has an enrollment of about 2,900 students.

Development plans for the new Hoover performing arts center

Therefore, the new Hoover performing arts center has been designed to feature a 940-seat auditorium. This is intended to provide enough room to accommodate the crowds that the school’s fine arts performances attract. Additionally, the construction will include a hallway, connecting the new theatre to the school’s band room.

A theatre arts teacher, Nancy Malone,  said the new performing arts center would be used for all arts. She pointed out that the current auditorium can’t be used for large orchestras or concerts due to the limited space. As a result, these types of events have to be hosted at alternate spaces outside the school. She said the staff and students were all ecstatic about the development of this new auditorium space.

Hoover High’s Principal, John Montgomery, said the community and students were anticipating the new performing arts center. He said the students were great artists and they have been waiting a long time for a development like this. Montgomery mentioned that the students win national and state competitions, but unfortunately they don’t have space to perform at the school. Therefore, he said a first-class facility needs to be built for them to perform for the community.

Blalock Building Company won the contract to build the Hoover performing arts center in  August. The company estimates that the project will be completed within 16 to 17 months.
