The Ministry of Transport in an official statement announced the opening of the first phase of Safaga port and Hurghada port in June of this year.

Safaga port that is estimated to cost EGP 6billion ($US 858million) aims to be a designated industrial area for processing grains and hosting grain silos, increasing the level of both processed and unrefined phosphate, a maritime service unit, docks for receiving and shipping of veterinary, manufacturing facilities and industries utilizing waste.

Since having many phosphate mines, Safaga is considered a phosphate export centre and it is also used by travelers traveling to Arabia plus some pilgrims use it as a gateway for Duba port.

Located 53 km south of Hurghada in the coast of the Red Sea with a depth reaching 16 meters, its vessel capacity can hold up to 60, 000tons.
