Founded in 2010 by inventor and CEO Steve Katsaros, Nokero is a privately held company headquartered in Denver, Colorado, USA with offices in Hong Kong and Kenya.
Nokero designs solar products for the approximately 1.3 billion people who live without basic access to electricity. Nokero’s products improve health, education and incomes across the developing world. Typically those living off the grid can spend up to 25% of their daily income on fuels. Kerosene lighting causes significant health hazards such as respiratory illness from toxic fumes, or burns caused by knocking over lamps. Unintentional poisoning of children is common, due to fuel being stored in plastic drinking bottles.
According to Nokero International Ltd Marketing Representative, Katie Steinharter, currently their products are available in Africa. Nokero sells directly out of Denver, Nairobi and China and works with agents and resellers worldwide.
Nokero has supplied their products to Pulse Experiential (communications and branding agency), who focuses on East African health and sanitation and uses lights to empower women. Asante Mama also uses solar lights to improve girls’ study time and focus on women’s success in East Africa.
Katie also added that their products are unique in that they are durable and long lasting—with batteries lasting an average of 2-3 years, and the products lasting up to 10 years with regular battery replacement. The lights are ideal for dark nights in Africa because they emit 2-8 times the amount of brightness compared to an average kerosene lamp (Nokero lights emit 13-50 lumens depending on the model, compared to the 1-6 lumens of a kerosene lamp). They also feature automatic on-off sensors that allow the light to conserve energy while charging in sunlight during the day, and then automatically turn on once it is dark at night.
