The Government of Tanzania has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Surbana International Consultants (PTE) to redesign, modernize and sculptor the cities of Mwanza and Arusha. This agreement was signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Minister of Lands, Housing and Human Settlements, Mr. Alphayo Kidata and the Singapore Minister for Local and Foreign Affairs Mr. Kong Wy Mun.

Officials from the Minister for Lands, Housing and Human settlements have also indicated that the Chinese Government will help in the re-design of the urban city, Dar-es-salaam and the townships of Mtwara and Lindi.

The current housing deficit in Tanzania is estimated at three million units and according to Mr. Kidata the purpose of modernizing and planning the cities is for the government to deal with the problem of inadequate housing as well as providing adequate space productive businesses as well as business activities.

The local authorities in Mwanza and Arusha cities have been engaging in running battles with the residents due to invasion of public areas and unplanned settlements. The project is set to kick off in July 2015 and the residents of the respective cities have been warned against being a hindrance to this development.
