Savannah Accelerated Development Authority (SADA) has signed a deal with Solar Giga, a Chinese company, to construct a US$120m solar energy plant in Tamale, the Northern regional capital of Ghana.

The 40MW power capacity project is expected to commence by the end of September 2014. According to Charles Akelyira Abugre, acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SADA, the construction of the solar plant is a joint venture between SADA and the Chinese company. Under the agreement, Solar Giga will finance the project, while SADA will acquire the land and licenses for the operation.

The Irrigation Authority is in the process of launching a mini hydro dam in the Upper East region. Mr. Abugre assured that right systems will be implemented to ensure a smooth running of the authority’s projects. He stressed that the performance audit will be carried out on the existing SADA projects, entreating Ghanaians to exercise patience with the new Board’s efforts in restructuring its activities for the benefit of all.

The project will generate 500 jobs and contribute to the technical competence at the University of Development Studies in understanding energy systems and alternative energies.
