It is a sigh of relief for Petroleum product consumers in Ghana, specifically petrol, who have been assured of constant supply of the commodity at petrol stations in response to the recent shortages across the country.

The assurance was given by the Chief Executive Officer of the BDCs Chamber, Senyo Hosi, in his statement. He said that more vessels are coming, which is expected to offer constant supply of fuel in the next two weeks. He added that, as more vessels arrive, the supply chain will increase to three weeks until the situation normalizes.

Reports reveal that there is enough fuel stock to last at least a month as authorities ration distribution of petrol to filling stations. He clarified that, the distribution is being rationed, not because the stocks are not available, but because there has been a turnaround time before the supply chain. In addition, suppliers have confirmed that enough fuel is reaching most of the worse hit areas of the country, especially Accra, the Ashanti, and Eastern regions, with a few trucks heading towards the north.

Funding confidence is expected to be re-established with the banks for more oil vessels. However, the financial hold up will be sorted out.  According to the Finance Minister Seth Terkper, US$60m is to be released to the BDCs to ensure adequate fuel in the system.

At present, 9 million litres have been delivered to serve most of Accra, the Ashanti region, and a bit of the Eastern region, and a few trucks are heading to the north. About 8 million distributions are targeted this week. Ghana’s petrol consumption is about 4.6 million a day.
