Genesis Electric Limited (GEL) has been named the 2014 African Power Utility of the year during the Africa Utility Week Awards for its deployment of multiple projects in different countries in Africa during the past nine years. An outstanding deployment of related facilities undertaken by the winner of 2014 African Power Utility Award is the 84MW off-grid gas-fired power plant at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation owned, Port Harcourt Refining Company (PHRC).

The annual awards event was held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Cape Town, South Africa. The African Power Utility Award winners are named by the independent panel of judges based on their excellence in the deployed power utilities in Africa. The consideration is based on service delivery, project roll-out, technology roll-out, revenue protection measures, loss reduction, grid integration and new energy sources.

Copperbelt Energy Corporation, Kenya Electricity Transmission Company, and ZESCO Limited of Zambia were the other finalist behind GEL in the 2014 African Power Utility Award.

About 50% of Nigeria’s petrol, diesel, kerosene and other refined products necessities are capable of being met by the PHRC when operating at full capacity. This considerably reduces huge petroleum products importation bills presently being incurred by the government.

Similarly, Mr. Akinwole Omoboriowo, the Genesis Electric Chief Executive Officer, was also named amongst the 60 Most Influential Figures in East &West African Power in ESI Africa 2014.

In his speech at the ESI Africa 2014 event, he wished many happy returns to the Federal Government of Nigeria for granting them a viable environment for the power sector and the opportunity to construct the 84MW off-grid gas-fired electric power supply solution for the largest refinery complex – the Port Harcourt Refining Company in sub-Sahara Africa.
