Cheap housing is on high demand, with research showing that Kenya has a deficit of more than 160, 000 housing units. A Chinese wall panels firm has moved on to join other investors in making construction cheaper by setting up a wall panels manufacturing unit in Nairobi.

Located along Mombasa road, the factory can produce a million square meters of walling in a year. According to the proprietor Feng Hui, the company hopes to increase the production to 1 m sq meters by the end of the year, which is double the current production rate.

The technology involves building pre-fabricated houses and every house is designed according to needs and local weather, as well as availability of materials. The company has also been supplying MDF, shutter board (marine ply), security door, tiles etc.

Wall panels are expected to be popular into the future, with the technology being used in China, United States, Japan, India, Iran, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and many other countries. A waal panel is light weight cement-based panel that, when used to set up a house wall, no plastering would be needed. As a result, transportation cost is also lower. The houses are faster to set up, with 10 – 45% time saving for project completion.

The company also targets the Middle East, North, Central and South Africa with its products. The company is also working with Chinese pre-fabricated house manufacturers to introduce the technology in Kenya.
