The Wallacedene taxi rank green transport facility in Cape Town becomes the first ever green transport facility to be constructed in the country. This is after all its construction aspects incorporated energy sufficient systems from the foundation to the rooftop. In addition to this, the building doesn’t necessarily need electricity to operate sufficiently.

According to Brett Herron, a member of the city’s committee responsible for transport, the facility has set a rank for future public transport facilities. This indicates how much the city is committed to energy conservation and innovation.

The construction of the Wallacedene taxi rank green transport facility involved installation of a solar photovoltaic (PV) rooftop system for electricity. The system has 24 batteries for the storage of reserve solar electricity mostly used at night or when there is no sun.

Since the taxi rank requires water for washing taxis, architects have decided to incorporate systems that will aid in harvesting rain water. The rain water will then be stored in underground 20 000 liters storage tanks equipped with appropriate pumping systems.

There will also be recycling of 70 percent of the water used in this building through an underground reclamation and filtering system.

Experts have noted that the capital cost spent in the whole installation of solar PV systems will still be recovered in a spun of up to 10 years due to the cost savings the green transport facility provides in terms of electricity.
