Construction of Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, a non-profit hospital located in Parktown, Johannesburg is currently underway starting June this year. This hospital will be undertaken as a personal dream of Mandela and upon completion, it will be amongst other three such hospitals built around Africa.

On the same project, AfriSam a Cement Production company has been awarded a contract for supply of 17 650m3 of ready mix concrete for construction of the hospital by Construction and Engineering Firm Group Five.

Construction works will involve setting up a building with a 200-bed capacity to serve as a pediatric hospital for pulmonology, Hematology, oncology, nephrology, cardiology, neurosciences, and craniofacial and pediatric surgery services.

Group Five was appointed as the main contractor by the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust (NMCHT) after a selective process which was headed by SIP project managers with the aid of Mbatha, Walters & Simpson Consultancy.

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital is located next to the University of Witwatersrand Medical School, which allows easy access to the facility allowing pediatric teaching. This increases staffing models in the University, allowing operational efficiencies.

The hospital will create employment to 150 doctors and 451 pediatric nursing professionals.
