Much has been said in the past regarding the environmental degradation caused by the use of fossil fuels and especially coal. The experience gathered in the west over the past century where coal was the key driver of the industrial revolution has led to the recognition of coal as a major contributor to pollution and global warming.
As Africa now undergoes its own renaissance its insatiable thirst for power has made it turn to coal that is plentiful and cheap but the west is discouraging Africa from using the same fuel that helped catapult the northern hemisphere to its present point. These has been evidenced by restrictions in funding of coal projects in preference to renewable soruces that are more environmentally friendly.
