Electricity- Africa’s basic need

In a recent poll taken by a segment of our readers regarding what is the most important requirement for Africa’s development, electricity was selected as the most urgently required resource. In a continent where everything is in short supply readers felt that provision of power as a top most priority would make the greatest difference to Africa’s population.

Just over half of the respondents felt that electricity was what Africa needed most when asked to choose between water, roads and rail. It is no secret that electricity has turned many an erstwhile backwater village into a burgeoning town in many places in Africa because cheap and available power allows for the development of local industries that spur employment and the development of other facilities such as schools and hospitals. Provision of water and road construction came in second at 20% with readers attesting to both the need for a healthy society and ease of communication.
