The Government of Ghana has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Pumptech, a Tamale-based firm to construct 21,600 affordable houses in Tamale.
The houses would be constructed using local technology according to Mr Osman Sahanoon, the Managing Director of Pumptech who attended signing ceremony on behalf of the company.
The construction, set to take about one year, will see delivery of two-bedroom self contained houses, each expected to be sold at US$6101.86 each. According to the Rural Development Mr Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, the project, whose aim is to provide affordable houses to citizens, would be replicated across the country, saying the government was committed working to providing more houses to cut down housing deficit in the country.
The signing was concluded by the Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Mr Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye on behalf of the government. Mr Julius Debrah, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development and Alhaji Mohammed Muniru Limuna, Northern Regional Minister witnessed the signing ceremony.
Ghana has been suffering a housing backlog of 1.5 million units as at 2012.
