The Oyo State in Nigeria is yet to receive light rail in the major cities of the state. This comes after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the government the State government and the China Civil Engineering Construction (CCEC) firm for the construction of a 24km light rail transport program in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. This was made known to the public by the State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi during the signing ceremony conducted at the governor’s office in the Executive Council Chambers.
The project represents a milestone development of modernizing the State’s major cities, since the project is described as the most efficient commuter system to achieve the States goals. In his explanation, cities with at least 2 million population in the State will be installed with light rails. However, most cities have surpassed the population target of 2million to 10million at present.
According to Mr. Li Binj, the CCEC Chief Engineer the project will extend from Ojoo all through to Mokola passing through Ibadan to end at the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. He also revealed that the firm is expected to be complete the project in a 3 years period of time. The project will as well create employment opportunity to thousands of the State residents
