The Department of Water and Sanitation in South Africa has launched a Sanitation solution in Khayelitsha. The Kayaloo Ablution facility was handed over to the people of the region by the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane.
The sanitation project consists of a communal ablution which has water borne toilets for both male and female users. There is also a showering area, basins and laundry troughs to allow residents of the area have a place to do their laundry from.
According to minister Mokonyane, the project which consists a single ablution block to be used by the whole community is just for testing how the Khayelitsha people will respond to the system and how comfortable they are with it.
The project will be accessed for duration of three to four months by the Department of Water and Sanitation before a decision is made on whether more of such should be constructed of an alternative option is sorted for.
In the mean time, Buffalo city municipality and some parts of KwaZulu Natal have already had such communal ablution facilities implemented.
This is in a bid to look for an alternative to address the issue of sanitation in the region.
