China State Construction Engineering Corp and Zimbabwe PER Lusulu Power have signed an agreement for the construction of a coal power station in Zimbabwe in April 2016.

The construction of a coal power station in Zimbabwe which will have a capacity of 600MW will come in the first phase of a 2000MW project.

Zimbabwe has had an electricity production capacity of 1100MW which is half of its peak demand something which has forced industries in the country to use diesel generators which is costly to maintain their operations.

According to the Chairperson of PER Lusulu Power, Stewart Perry, financial institutions in China had agreed to fund the construction of a coal power station in Zimbabwe which will be located in North-Western Zimbabwe at a cost of US $1.1-bn. This will be done subject to the company signing a power purchase agreement with the country’s energy regulator.

Design and construction of the plant will be undertaken by China State Construction Engineering Corp. the company will also construct power transmission lines and this project is expected to be complete by 2019.

Perry further noted during the ceremony for signing the agreement with CSCES that the construction of a coal power station in Zimbabwe would be undertaken in 4 phases and it would be one of the largest projects that Zimbabwe has ever had.

The country has been experiencing power shortages due to the fact that potential investors have always been kept away.
