Construction of the 131 000msq Mall of Africa, the largest retail development in Africa is currently going on.

The mall which has a unique design boasts a good location being in the middle of the mixed use Waterfall City development in Midrand, Gauteng.

The mall and its courts design construction got inspiration from the natural, geological beauty of Africa. It will have four courts each depicting the different climatic zones of the African continent.

One court will have the oleum design to depict the oil rich West Africa, Great lakes court will represent East Africa, and Crystal court will be for Mineral Southern Africa while Sand court will represent Northern Africa.

According to one of the architects from MDS Architects, Tia Kanakakis, the Mall of Africa will have high shop fronts, wide passage areas, an undulating roof feature in the middle and it will have animated LED lighting. There will also be the inclusion of the Town Square which will have restaurants. The mall is expected to have 261 tenants.

According to the Gerhard Saayman, a professional Engineer at Aurecon which is in charge of Civil and structural engineering on the development, the building will have a gross area of 485 000msq which is equal to 65 rugby pitches. This makes the development a rewarding project for his company to work on.
