The Gauteng Aerotropolis 25 year master plan is set to through an approval and adoption process this month. According to the Project Manager, Jack van der Merwe, special purpose vehicles (SPV) were also in the process of being put together.
The Government of South Africa will form the SPV and it will be used by all aerotropolis stakeholders as a single point of contact. This will also be used for the pilot, management and coordination of the execution of the Aerotropolis master plan. In addition to this, the SPV will also create a funding model for the development.
Van der Merwe further noted that if the aerotropolis development is planned and structured properly then, there will be maximum benefits to both the area it is being developed in and the whole country.
He noted that the time and distance relationship had to be put in place and the land use policy was also important.
Projects to be included in the development are the construction of the Denel Mega City Aviation and Aerospace Manufacturing Precinct. There will also be the construction of a South African Post Office ecommerce hub and a cold chain village- the temperature in this case will be controlled.
Van der Merwe noted that he was positive that the development will receive the appropriate funding support and 266 000 jobs will be created.
