Resurfacing works on the R27 road from Milnerton to Melkbosstrand is progressing smoothly with works expected to be through by Early 2016.
Resurfacing on the northbound carriageway is complete on both lanes between the intersections of Racecourse and Marine Drive roads. The intersections between Melkbosstrand and Tryall Road are currently receiving edge break repairs and the gravels shoulders being supplemented.
The Southbound carriageway between the Marine drive and Bay Beach Avenue intersections are also getting the patches repaired. The resurfacing of this part of the road will begin once the base patching has been completed to the Racecourse Road Intersection.
Other works talking place on the road section is the cleaning of culverts, replacement of broken kerbs, channels and chutes. This is being done on both the North and Southbound Carriageways between the Porterfield/Link road and Racecourse road intersections. New mole barriers are being installed between Sandown and Link roads.
Possible delays on the road renovation may occur due to the recent heavy rainfall and load shedding will also influence the batching process. Generators will however be used to ease this.
While the works continue, there will be a lot of traffic interference. The lanes between Blaauwberg Road and Marine Drive will be merged and both lanes will only be open for traffic in the morning peak hours between 6am to 10am.
Through this project, the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works will help in employment opportunities. 8% of the contract will be for enterprises in the Western Cape while 7000 person day jobs will be created.
