Construction work on the New N2 Wild Coast Toll Road is expected to begin later in 2016. This was after the Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform in South Africa, Gugile Nkwinti recently stated the date during a public consultation meeting on the project.
The Minister also received a project status report from South Africa Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) before the meeting.
Minister Nkwinti noted during the meeting that the decision for construction of the N2 Wild Coast Toll Road had been made and plans on relocation of individuals in areas where the roads would pass was underway. This also applied for the graves on the road area.
The Minister however noted that in case the court set a ruling against the construction of the N2 Wild Coast Toll Road then, work on the same would have to be pushed to 2017 as they settle with the court.
Survey carried out by Sanral indicated that construction of the N2 toll road along the Wild Coast had received an undisputed level of support.
According to an argument by Sanral, construction of the road in the area received unanimous support due to the fact that people are anticipating employment out of the same.
The Minister is currently the Chairperson of the Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Committee (PICC) which is in charge of overseeing strategic infrastructure projects in the country.
PICC currently manages 18 strategic infrastructure projects (SIP’s) and Minister Nkwinti is responsible for Sip 3 which looks at the South East Node and Corridor Development.
