The 158 km Kawambwa to Luwingu Road construction in Zambia is now underway. The works will see to it that the road is improved from its gravel state to bituminous.
According to the Luapala Province Regional Manager for Road Development Agency (RDA), Eng Guston Meleki, the road construction in Zambia will cost US $32.83m and will be implemented by UNIK Civil Contractors and supervised by BCHOD. This project has four sections with different interventions.
Eng Meleki noted that the first section will be the periodic maintenance of 24km of road from Kawambwa Tea Estate Road which section 2, 3 and 4 will be the upgrade of 105km of Road from D019 Junction via Mushota to Luwingu to bituminous state.
Section 5 of the project will be the upgrade of 30km of Chisembe Road to Chief Chama Road from earth road to gravel road.
Eng Meleki also noted that the first section of the project had been completed. Section 2, 3 and 4 were 66 percent complete for subgrade formation, 54 percent for sub base construction, 54 percent for base construction while 32 percent was double seal construction.
Section 5 had 35 percent of its road formation and gravelling completed.
The Kawambwa to Luwingu Road construction in Zambia Project is expected to aid in the improvement of the economy of the Luapula and Northern Provinces of Zambia.
Once it is complete, transportation of agro produce will be ease while accessibility to education and health facilities in the region will also be easier.
This will create the shortest link from Kawambwa via Luwingu and Kasama through to Nakonde.
Three subcontractors are working on the project which has provided employment to 170 people and is set to be complete by end of the year.
