TAL South Africa has successfully completed tiling installation using tile adhesives for the 100-bed Netcare Pinehaven Hospital in Krugersdorp features about 10 000 m2.
Netcare Pinehaven Hospital opened in late 2015, following the completion of construction and tile installation work. The installation of porcelain tiles on floors and walls included large feature walls, with glass tiles and mosaics as feature panels, as well as drywalls in ward bathrooms and showers that required waterproofing prior to tiling. Other tile installation areas included the staircases, kitchen and canteen.
A unique aspect of the project was that the hospital features numerous small ward bathrooms with drywalling. According to TAL Technical Advice Representative Schalk Pelzer, the installation of glass tiles onto drywalls requires extra care and consideration. Glass products are brittle and rigid, and therefore require a flexible adhesive system. This is even more so when tiling onto drywalls, which are prone to more movement.
Failure to use a flexible adhesive system will result in any movement being transferred directly to the glass which, being reflective and translucent, will immediately show defects that might not be as visible with opaque tiles.
Architect VDO Consulting therefore requested that TAL complete a specification for the main contractor and tiling contractor to follow. TAL also provided the necessary training to JonRoux Tiling & Plastering Contractors, a TAL-registered tiler.
The training sessions were conducted on-site, focusing on the most effective means of using TAL Sureproof for successful waterproofing installation inside showers. TAL Sureproof is a tough, flexible and seamless rapid-setting, two-component (2K) slurry-applied waterproofing membrane suitable for waterproofing shower recesses, internal wet areas and external decks, among others.
This was backed up with regular communication with management in terms of curing times, and by ensuring correct materials were on-site. The project began in February 2015, and was completed successfully in September 2015, using a range of additional TAL products.
These included TAL Bond, TAL Keycoat, TAL Goldstar 6, TAL Goldstar 12, TAL Wall and Floor Grout, TAL Sealmaster 1000, TAL Floor Primer, TAL Sureproof and TAL Sureproof Membrane, and TAL Industrial Fine Epoxy Grout.
TAL Industrial Fine Epoxy Grout, an epoxy-resin based anti-bacterial and chemical-resistant grout, was used in the hospital kitchen to ensure an impervious and hygienic finish suitable for food-processing areas.
“Visitors to the Netcare Pinehaven Hospital can experience first-hand the quality products in conjunction with good workmanship that makes this a highly-successful tiling installation carrying the TAL guarantee,” Pelzer concludes.
