Atinkou power plant project (Ciprel 5) update

Home » News » Atinkou power plant project (Ciprel 5) update

The Atinkou power plant otherwse known as Ciprel 5 has taken delivery of reactors, electrical transformers, and various electrical equipment.

The materials that were delivered include:
– 3 autotransformers of 175 tons.
– 2 transformers of 80 tons.
– 2 reactors of 53 tons.
The materials are for the building of 2 transformer stations for the transport of electrical energy that will be produced in the CIPREL 5 Power Plant in Côte d’Ivoire.

The Show Goes On

The CIPREL 5 Power Plant in Côte d’Ivoire is a natural gas-fired plant that was developed between the years of 1994 and 2009, in three phases, with a fourth phase, Ciprel IV, to be added. The fourth phase will consist of a new 111 MW gas turbine. It’ll also include the conversion of the two latest open cycle turbines that are combined into cycle turbines. The additional of the two most recent gas turbines will enable the power plant to generate an additional 800GWh/per annum of low-cost power. The advantage to this is that it will be without the need for any incremental gas consumption, and no further greenhouses gases are being emitted. CIPREL and The IFC funded the project with a $132.54 million loan to be used for the expansion. To carry out the operation in the best possible conditions, the teams of Bolloré Transport & Logistics deployed innovative logistics solutions at the port of Abidjan. After successful delivery of the materials, they were then transported via road to the operating site, and received by Vinci Energies, the client.

This expansion will result in the total installed capacity of the CIPREL 5 Power Plant in Côte d’Ivoire, increasing to 543 MW. This will lead to improved access to electricity for Ivorians, sustained Côte d’Ivoire’s economic growth. It will also help Ivory Coast meet its export objectives to neighboring countries present in the sub-region.

Ivory Coast to near US $530 million Ciprel 5 thermal power deal

Ivory Coast is set to construct a mega thermal power plant after a complete negotiations with the local unit of France’s Eranove SA over a US $530 m deal. That could result in expansion of the county’s generation capacity by 5%.

The gas fired facility which will be owned by Cie Ivoirienne de Production d’Electricite, known as Ciprel an operator of the West African nation’s biggest electricity plant, is envisioned to have a capacity of is 400Mw.

The plant will be based in Jacqueville, 61km  southwest of the commercial capital, Abidjan, near the country’s offshore gas fields. Ciprel has contracted Siemens AG and Spain’s TSK Electronica y Electricidad SA to help build and supply components for the plant, and Construction is likely to begin by the end of the year.

Installed Capacity

Despite the nation increasingly exports surplus requirements to neighboring countries such as Ghana, Burkina Faso and Liberia, it has managed to expand its generation capacity through large investments in infrastructure helping the country accelerate the county’s annual economic growth to more than 8% since 2012.

The country’s installed capacity is about 2,200 megawatts, while peak demand reached 1,148 megawatts in 2014, according to the World Bank. Ciprel’s existing gas-fired plant in Abidjan produces 556 megawatts of power.

“There’s a clear effort and commitment from the president to follow through on promises,” said Kwasi Prempeh, executive director of the Center for Democratic Development, a policy think tank in Accra, Ghana.

390MW power plant to be constructed in Côte d’Ivoire

A 390MW power plant is set to be constructed in the town of Jacqueville near Abidjan, in Côte d’Ivoire. Known as Atinkou, the power plant is similar to the one developed by Ciprel, a subsidiary of the Eranove group and a leading operator in power generation in Côte d’Ivoire. With an installed capacity of 390MW, Atinkou also known as Ciprel 5 in reference to the four units of this power plant operated since 1994; will use the gas-steam “combined cycle” technology which increases energy efficiency.

The innovation

In addition, Atinkou power plant project will undertake a technological leap by introducing the first Class F gas turbines in Sub-Saharan Africa. These innovations will allow the production of more electricity without additional gas consumption. The cost of producing electrical energy is thus optimized and the environment is preserved by reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

According to the Minister for Petroleum, Energy and Renewable Energies, Mr. Abdourahmane Cissé, this power plant is part of the State’s ambition to strengthen the country’s electricity production capacity through new units operated by experienced private partners to enable Côte d’Ivoire to double its energy capacity to 4,000MW by 2020 and to consolidate its position as an energy hub in the region.

A concession agreement for the financing, design, construction, operation and maintenance of a new power plant has been signed between Cote d’ Ivoire and Eranove Group.

About Eranove

The Eranove Group is a leading player in utilities management and electricity and drinking water production in Africa. The Pan-African Industrial group has been present in Côte d’Ivoire for several decades (SODECI, CIE, CIPREL, Awale, and Smart Energy), in Senegal (SDE) since 1996, and in the Democratic Republic of Congo via a service contract with Régideso since 2012.

Ivory Coast secures financial closure for Atinkou power plant project

Ivory Coast has secured financial closure for the Atinkou power plant project. Marc Albérola, CEO of Eranove made the announcement and said that several financing agreements have been signed between the project developer, the pan-African group Eranove; the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank Group’s private sector financing arm; and the government of Ivory Coast towards the project.

The financial mobilisation was carried out by the IFC from the African Development Bank (AfDB); the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), the German development agency; the Netherlands Development Finance Corporation (FMO); the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF); as well as the Fund for International Development (OPEC Fund).
