According to experts, the Dodoma Outer Ring Road project would not only transform the look of Dodoma City and make it one of the city’s landmarks, but it would also link Tanzania with Burundi, Uganda, and Rwanda, as well as DRC.
As per the project’s write-up, the project’s implementation is a response to the need for better logistics services to handle the projected population boom as well as the expansion of economic activities in Dodoma, the country’s political capital.
Mr. Majaliwa ordered the Tanzania Road Agency (TANROADS) to work with the Ministry of State, President’s Office-Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG) to create a procedure for empowering and involving local youth who are hired to work on various projects throughout the country so that they can be used more frequently by local construction companies.
Dodoma City Outer Ring Road project overview
The proposed Bitumen standard road shall run from the Dodoma – Kondoa trunk road at a settlement known as Veyula. Additionally, it shall crisscross southeast towards another settlement called Ihumwa along Dodoma – Morogoro trunk road.
On or after Ihumwa the road shall snake southwards to the Matumbulu settlement along Dodoma – Iringa trunk road. From here it shall proceed northwest to Nala settlement situated alongside Dodoma – Singida trunk road. The loop ends at the Veyula settlement.
Upon completion, the Dodoma City Outer Ring Road will constitute three bases, four carriageways, five bridges, 61 box culverts, 310 pipe culverts, and street lights. It will be separated by cobblestones for safety reasons. Moreover, the road will also constitute drainage channels on either side, and roundabouts in Veyula, Ihumwa, and Matumbulu.
The objective of the Dodoma City Outer Ring Road
The road’s main objective is to respond to the need for improved logistics services to cope with the expected population boom and expansion of economic activities in the political capital of Dodoma.

It is also expected to provide efficient road transport access to the rest of the country at large and boost regional integration for the East African country with other countries in the EAC region. This is because it lies at the crossroads of two major continental road corridors: (i) the Central Corridor which connects the Port City of Dar es Salaam to the Tanzanian interior and (ii) the Trans-African Highway 4 (TAH4).
Social and community impact projects
As part of the Dodoma city outer ring road project other small projects including the drilling of four water wells, the construction of four health centers, and the rehabilitation of Chimwana Primary School in Ihumwa will be carried out.
The Mrisho-Mwangaza-Kisasa and Madeli Road, as well as the 28.7-kilometer road from Kizota to Zuzu, will also be constructed. Furthermore, five ambulances will be procured in a bid to heighten people’s safety and health.
