Kenya has commenced construction of an ultra-modern stadium in Mombasa. Mombasa County sports executive Munywoki Kyalo revealed the reports and said the field will be used for hosting local, national and international matches.

The move is also aimed at addressing the shortage of sporting activities, caused by lack of adequate stadia. The Mombasa County Stadium, estimated to cost US $16m was scheduled for construction in 2018 but experienced delays because the county sports council wanted to include facilities for other sports and not just football.

The county intends to completely pull down the dilapidated facility and erect a new one that “meets the international bench marks. Kyallo noted that they took more than a year planning and strategizing; factoring the architectural design before awarding the tender to Turkish based firm Stara Supplies & Construction Company.

The sports facility will have a capacity of 12, 500 to accommodate football fans and international rugby matches. Upon completion, it will have an official Fifa standard 11-aside Astro-Turf pitch. The project will also include a 25×50 meters swimming pool. Kyalo said that alongside the stadium, an indoor sports arena with a capacity of 1,200. The project is expected to be completed in 14 months.

Other facilities will include a Mosque, modern changing rooms, and media centre fitted with VAR computers and a conventional centre that will accommodate about 3,000 visitors.

“We hope that we are going to give Mombasa and Coast residents a chance to enjoy a spectacular Fifa-approved facility. The county government is also planning to construct another mini football stadium in Peleleza Likoni Sub County and in Kisauni. We want to make sure that at least we have a stadium in every sub county,” said Kyallo.
