Reconstruction works on the Ado Ekiti -Akure federal highway in Nigeria is set to commence soon. This is after Governors of Ekiti and Ondo states agreed to fund for the project.

Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi and his Ondo State counterpart Rotimi Akerodolu, confirmed their willingness to proceed with the project in correspondences to the minister of works, Babatunde Raji Fashola and ongoing negotiations on repairs of the 50 km road.

“We have already secured approval-in-principle from the African Development Bank for a low-interest long-term loan to reconstruct and dualise the road. However, the African Development Bank cannot move on the funds unless we get clearance from the Federal Government,” said Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi.

Completion of the road will ease the passable state of the road unlike its present deplorable state. It will also account for good governance from both states because road maintenance and other infrastructural developments by government showcase the degree of accountability of authority to its citizens.

Nigeria’s annual traffic fatality rate was reported as 5,000 in 2008. A major contributor to this statistic is the poor condition of the roads. The country has 120,546-mile network of roads, the quality of which is generally crumbling because they are poorly maintained. Heavy travel on major roads accelerates the wear, vehicle accidents are very common, and the fatality rate is high.

Potholes are numerous, leading drivers to swerve around them, sometimes putting themselves and those in other vehicles at risk. There are frequent delays when vehicles have to slow down. Lagos, the capital city, is notorious for its slow traffic. Some roads have deteriorated so badly they are impassable
