The $3bn Chicago Bears stadium is deliberating on the viable location for its stadium with three sites in Hammond to contemplate on. This is according to latest updates provided by Hammond’s mayor, Tom McDermott. The mayor has ambitious plans to get the project break ground this summer as the tussle between Indiana and Illinois continues. However, the team has to choose where the stadium will go.
He hopes that the announcement will happen in a few weeks. A site near Wolf Lake has largely been the focus of the conversation so far. However, it is not the only site as the mayor noted he could not disclose where the other sites were. “We want to make it so that when there’s not a game, there’s still attractions to go to, and it’s a blank slate here in Hammond. The Bears are going to be telling us what they want, and we’re going to make it happen,” McDermott said. Stadium projects across the U.S. are taking shape with Hawaii’s iconic Aloha stadium turning a new leaf.
The final controlled collapse in the Aloha stadium teardown has paved the way for a new $650 million stadium set for 2029. The teardown signals another major chapter in the history of the Aloha Stadium which came to an end. Crews carried out the final stadium tripping event on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in dismantling the iconic facility.
Outlook on the Chicago Bears Stadium in Hammond
The Chicago Bears stadium in Hammond seems like one nearing conclusion, but Illinois is still in talks to gain favor. Illinois could still find a way to keep the team, but that would likely require a special session. The go-getter attitude has caught the attention of other two professional sports teams. They have also expressed interest in relocating to Northwest Indiana.
Phil Taillon, the president and CEO of the South Shore Convention & Visitor Authority said neither is a football team nor a Chicago team. “It shows us that we did a good job throughout this process, that Indiana proved that we’re a pro-business environment state, that we are not scared to step up when it comes to incentives that make sense on getting a project done,” Taillon said.
Once complete, the Bears project would span at least 300 acres. Moreover, the stadium itself would require between 60 and 110 acres. Businesses would be acquired through eminent domain, but McDermott said no homes would be impacted. He also said there are not any plans at this time to move the Bears’ practice facility to Hammond, with that facility currently located in Lake Forest.
