The $700M+ DC BLOX data center near Nashville Zoo is facing a fierce pushback as a petition against the project tops 500k signatures. It has been about three weeks since the Nashville Zoo launched a petition against the proposed facility. Since then, the petition has garnered more than half a million signatures. It has also received support from country superstar Brad Paisley. The data center in question is a proposed single-story building that would span 69,220 square feet.
There is also a proposed, much larger 261,000-square-foot facility that will serve as a 40-megawatt data center. This is according to the permit application filed by Jeremy Dreiling. The facility, known as the DC BLOX Data Center, would be located at 648 Grassmere Park in South Nashville. The location lies just feet away from the Nashville Zoo. Dreiling has also filed for a permit to demolish two existing buildings at the location. A data center project in Janesville City, Wisconsin is also facing significant pushback due to its massive scale. A council meeting today aims to find an amicable solution for both locals and Viridian Partners.
Official Word from DC BLOX Regarding Pushback on Proposed Data Center
The Nashville Zoo is petitioning against the DC BLOX data center as it cites concerns about constant mechanical noises. It also noted that bright lights and electrical vibrations will disturb and harm rare animals who call the zoo their home. In a response to the growing opposition, DC BLOX notes that it has heard and appreciates the concerns that have been raised about the project. “Over the past decade, DC BLOX has operated data centers near neighborhoods, schools, daycare centers, and businesses throughout the Southeast. We look forward to discussing with community leaders how our project can responsibly address the concerns expressed about the Nashville project.”
They also noted that project will use closed-loop or waterless cooling designs to conserve water. We will work with the local utility to ensure that we pay for all power used as well as any new energy infrastructure required to support our project. We will test and manage noise to locally required levels and will shield light fixtures. Also, we will adhere to all federal and local environmental regulations. And we also stand ready to discuss and address other local concerns.”
