The first phase of the Obelisk solar and battery project in Egypt has successfully commenced operations according to Scatec. Scatec is responsible for the 1.1GW Obelisk solar and 100MW/200MWh battery storage project in Egypt. The power project is being implemented in two phases, with the first phase already operational. The first phase entails 561MW of solar capacity. Moreover, it includes 100MW/200MWh battery energy storage.
On the other hand, the second phase adds an additional 564MW of solar capacity. The second phase is currently under construction and is expected to commence operations during the summer of 2026. “Obelisk is being built at record pace since the signing of the PPA in September 2024. It is a testament to our integrated approach and the unparalleled execution power of our construction team.
This demonstrates our ability to execute large complex projects ahead of schedule and on budget. We also look forward to continuing supporting Egypt’s ambitions to increase renewable energy capacity and strengthen energy security,” noted Terje Pilskog, CEO of Scatec. Another similar project is Infinity Power’s 200MW Ras Ghareb wind power project.
Significance of the Obelisk Solar and Battery Project Once Fully Operational
Once fully operational, the Obelisk solar and battery project is expected to be of monumental significance in Egypt and Africa. For instance, it is expected to be Africa’s largest hybrid solar and battery project. Moreover, it will have an expected abatement of more than 1.2 million tonnes of CO2e emissions per year. It is also projected to deliver over 3,000 GWh of clean energy annually.
The power will be supplied to the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) denominated in USD. Scatec currently holds a 60% economic interest in the power plant and is in advanced discussions with additional equity partners. The company provides Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) services. Moreover, it also provides Asset Management (AM) and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) services for the project.
