GIGA Storage has launched Amsterdam’s largest battery project, “Giraffe” battery energy storage system (BESS) in Westhaven, marking a major milestone in the city’s transition toward a more flexible and resilient power network. The facility, which has a total capacity of 10 MW/47 MWh, is now the largest battery installation in Amsterdam. It is also one of the key grid-balancing assets in the Netherlands. The system uses 12 Tesla Megapack 2XL units, each providing about 3.9 MWh. This feeds directly into the Netherlands’ grid to stabilize electricity supply and reduce congestion in one of the country’s most power-dense cities.
The site also sits within the Amsterdam port area, which already hosts significant renewable generation capacity. This is around 73 MW of wind power and 350,000 meters squared of solar panels. These continue to create a high demand for grid management and storage capacity. The company is also developing GIGA Green Turtle in Belgium, which is one of the largest BESS in Europe.

Market and Regional Impact of Amsterdam’s Largest Battery Project, Giraffe
The Giraffe project plays a pivotal role in easing grid congestion in Amsterdam’s industrial west. Here, rapid electrification and renewable deployment have placed pressure on the existing transmission capacity. By providing real-time balancing and frequency regulation, GIGA Storage’s Giraffe BESS also supports the Netherlands’ broader goal of achieving a reliable, decarbonized electricity system by 2035.
GIGA Storage’s project also represents a step forward in commercial battery storage viability. The financing model for Amsterdam’s largest battery project showcases how large-scale BESS can attract both financing from sustainable investment banks while ensuring commercial returns.
Regionally, the project will join a host of others and serve as a benchmark for nearby municipalities and cities facing similar grid difficulties.
Giraffe BESS in Amsterdam also shows how private sector innovation, public-policy alignment, and advanced battery technology are increasingly being used to achieve climate goals.
