The Nighthawk Energy Storage Project is a utility-scale battery energy storage development located in Poway, California. Arevon began construction on the project, which was valued at approximately $600 million. The facility was designed to deliver 300 megawatts (MW) of power with 1,200 megawatt-hours of storage capacity to support grid stability during periods of peak electricity demand.
The Nigthhawk Energy Storage project joins a list of other BESS projects under development in California chief amongst them being the largest in the world the Darden Clean Energy Project that recently got approval from the California Energy Commission (CEC). Arevon has also just completed the $2Bn Eland Solar-plus-Storage Center in LA, California a 758MW of solar photovoltaic capacity and a 1,200MWh battery energy storage system.
Other Projects
Other than the Nighthawk Energy Storage Project, Averon is also working on the Cormorant Energy Storage Project in Daly City.
Averon has commenced construction of the Cormorant Energy Storage Project in Daly City, California. The project is a $600 million facility that will offer storage capacity of 250MW/1,000 megawatt-hours (MWh). Moreover, it is expected to become operational in 2027 and power around 321,000 homes for up to four hours. The move enhances grid reliability by providing stored electricity during peak demand periods.
The energy storage system, owned and operated by Arevon, is also under a long-term offtake agreement with MCE. The company provides electricity to more than 1.8 million residents and businesses across several counties such as Contra Costa, Napa, Marin and Solano.

Local Construction and Economic Impact
California-headquartered Rosendin is leading the construction for Arevon. At peak, the project will employ over 130 workers, generating significant economic activity for Poway’s local businesses, including suppliers, restaurants, and accommodation providers.
The build will also inject over $30 million in local payments to San Diego County and nearby communities throughout the project’s life. The City of Poway alone is projected to receive about $12 million, which will help improve local infrastructure and community services.
Grid Connection and Technology
The energy storage system will connect to the grid via the Sycamore Canyon Substation on Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, distributing power to the wider San Diego region. The project will utilize advanced lithium iron phosphate batteries, known for safety and reliability — a key concern for contractors, operators, and surrounding communities.
Community Collaboration and Safety Measures
Arevon is working closely with the Poway Fire Department to ensure robust safety measures are in place during construction and operation. Additional community benefits include the establishment of a $2 million community fund for public projects and partnerships with local organizations supporting safety, youth programs, and regional events.
