Baker Hughes to Supply Technology & Equipment for ST LNG Offshore Terminal off Matagorda, Texas

Baker Hughes has been selected to supply gas compression and power generation equipment for a proposed offshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) export terminal being developed by ST LNG, LLC off the coast of Texas, the companies announced Monday.

The project will occupy federal waters approximately 10.4 nautical miles offshore Matagorda in Brazos Block BA-476 and aims for a total capacity of 8.4 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Developers plan to build it in phases, with the first phase targeting 2.1 MTPA of production capacity.

Under the agreement, Baker Hughes will provide two LM6000PF aeroderivative gas turbine-driven centrifugal compressor trains and three NovaLT 16 gas turbine generator packages. The equipment is intended to support initial liquefaction and power generation requirements for the facility’s first phase.

The proposed terminal includes multiple offshore platforms for gas treatment, liquefaction, and accommodations, as well as a floating storage unit. The broader development plan outlines a multi-phase buildout, though the project has not yet reached a final investment decision.

Company executives said the selection of equipment is part of ongoing development work. ST LNG indicated it is targeting first LNG production in the second quarter of 2030, subject to project approvals and financing.

Baker Hughes stated it expects to recognize orders related to the agreement as the project advances.

Significance

The project is expected to generate more than 1,000 jobs in Texas during its development and construction phases. Furthermore, other projects such as the NextEra gas-fired power plant in Texas will benefit in provision of a reliable fuel source.

The ST LNG export terminal joins other major federal waters export infrastructure projects off the Texas coast, such as the Texas GulfLink Deepwater Port—an offshore crude oil export facility recently licensed by the U.S. Maritime Administration—reflecting broader momentum in deepwater energy infrastructure development along the Gulf of Mexico.
