Memphis International Airport (MEM) is embarking on its largest project to date; a $650 million multi-year modernization of its terminal facilities. Beginning in August, this initiative seeks to improve the travel experience, for passengers increase the airports capacity and also support growth. Let’s delve into what travelers can anticipate from these renovations.

Having a rooted history since its inception in 1929 Memphis International Airport serves as a hub for both passenger and cargo transportation. Over the years MEM has undergone expansions and renovations to meet the escalating demand. However, recognizing the aging infrastructure and evolving passenger needs there is a call for a modernization effort. The ongoing project, at MEM stands out as the largest in its history as it focuses on revamping aspects of the airport.

Memphis International Airport ( MEM) Modernization Project Overview

Concourse A Demolition

The phase of the Terminal Modernization and Seismic Program (TMSP) entails dismantling Concourse A. Erected in 1974 this concourse ceased operations in 2022 when activities were consolidated into the modernized B Concourse.

Construction crews will use the space currently occupied by Concourse A as a laydown area. Additionally, planners are considering this space for a Consolidated Rental Car Center (CONRAC) and the future MSCAA administration building. Demolition work will start in August, and workers expect this phase to take 8-10 months.

Introduction of New Commercial Ground Transportation Lane

Another early phase of Memphis International Airport modernization project includes adding a new commercial ground transportation lane on the baggage claim level of the short-term parking garage. From October this lane will accommodate taxis, shuttles, limousines and rideshare services such as Lyft and Uber. Moving these services will make passenger pickups and drop offs efficient reducing congestion and improving operations. The project is expected to be finished by the end of 2024.

Replacement of Outer Drive

After completing the lane project, the outer commercial drive on the ticketing and departures level will be shut down for demolition and reconstruction. This stage is crucial for expanding the building and also includes seismic upgrades for safety and longevity. Furthermore, the drive replacement is set to begin in 2025 and is expected to take about two years to finish.

Terminal Upgrades

The most significant phase of the MEM Modernization project focuses on modernizing Terminal B’s arrival and departure areas.

The terminal has operated for over 60 years. However, modernization will begin in 2026 with an expected completion date in 2030. The planned modernization includes:

  • Expanded Open Space: Designers will redesign the layout of the baggage and ticketing areas to enhance passenger movement and also create a spacious and inviting atmosphere.
  • Enlarging the Security Screening Checkpoint: Workers will expand the security screening zone to accommodate more passengers and reduce waiting times.
  • Relocated Escalators and Stairs: The renovation team will move escalators and stairs to the front of the building for accessibility and convenience.
  • Preserving Architectural Integrity: While modernizing the terminal, architects will strive to maintain its charm.
  • Implementing a New In-Line Checked Baggage Inspection System: This system aims to streamline baggage handling processes for increased efficiency and security.
  • Strengthening Against Seismic Activity: Furthermore, construction crews will make structural enhancements to ensure that the terminal can better withstand seismic events, thus prioritizing passenger and staff safety.
