A Rivian electric vehicle factory is under consideration for construction in North Texas and could possibly rival Tesla’s electric vehicle plant or “Gigafactory” which is currently under construction in Austin, Texas. Rivian Automotive, based in Irvine- California is a company that is backed by both Ford and Amazon and has announced that they would invest at least US$5 billion to build this factory with the capacity to produce 200,000 vehicles a year.  The Fort Worth EDC proposed an economic development package with Rivian that would include up to US$440 million in grants and county tax abatements, according to an announcement from Rivian.

Although Rivian’s facility would be primarily factory rather than office space, it would employ more than twice as many workers as Toyota’s 2.1 albeit at lower average salaries, and be more than five times the million-square-foot corporate headquarters complex on 100 acres in Plano. This project would have five times the capital investment as Toyota’s, which is widely currently known as one of North Texas’s most impactful economic and biggest development wins ever. Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO has boasted the so-called GigaTexas project as the largest automotive manufacturing facility in the United States. The plant is being built on just over 2,480 acres Tesla purchased last year. In a presentation the company gave to Travis County officials, the electric automaker said that they will hire at least 5,000 employees to work at the facility.

While a number of states and cities are still under consideration, the Texas site has become the front-runner for Rivian electric vehicle factory . The company, and in particular R.J. Rivian Automotive Inc. recently announced plans of building its $5 billion Rivian EV Plant in east Atlanta, which according to the Governor, Brian Kemp will be the largest economic development project in the state’s history.

Rivian EV Plant to bring 7,500 jobs to east Atlanta

Helen Russell, the Rivian Chief People Officer hinted that the company selected Georgia as an ideal location to set up the Rivian EV Plant due its local talent pool. Likewise, the founder and CEO of the company,  Robert Scaringe, also pointed out that the company’s decision was based on the availability of good  workers for recruitment. The new facility is expected to create upto 7,500 jobs with competitive wages in the area and it would be a replica of an existing Rivian  plant in Illinois. Russell also mentioned that the job descriptions would include “on the line” positions, plus other technical and customer care roles.

The new Rivian EV Plant will be built with the capacity to produce about 400,000 vehicles each year. Likewise, the company said it would grow its Illinois plant to deliver up to 200,000 vehicles per year, up from its current  capacity of 150,000 and this expansion would bring about  800 to 1,000 jobs in the coming year.

Rivian’s chief executive, R.J. Scaringe said  the company is targeting having this Rivian EV Plant operational and producing vehicles for sale by 2024. Details are yet to be revealed on the full incentive package offered for Rivian’s plant in Georgia, but the company could obtain full benefits of the state’s mega project tax credit; this could be worth up to $118 million in state income tax credits and it’s available for companies offering employment to at least 1,800 people or investing at least $450 million.

Brian Kemp welcomed the development of this new Rivian EV Plant to Georgia and he also said the facility would help accelerate the growth of the state’s electric vehicle supply chain. Kemp also pointed out that developing the EV supply chain would position the state, at the forefront of a high-growth industry and also create a variety of economic development opportunities for the state and the region.
