Iraq is set to benefit from a US$250 million new gas processing facility named ArtawiGas25, built by TotalEnergies on the Ratawi oil field in Southern Iraq. This investment comes as the country strives to achieve a reduction in the import bill and attract foreign investment. ArtawiGas25 is a part of a larger US$10 billion GGIP multi-energy project that will improve Iraq’s electricity supply and enhance the development of the country’s natural resources.  The project will greatly reduce gas flaring at the gas field as soon as the end of this year according to TotalEnergies’ press release.

What is the GGIP?

The Gas Growth Integrated Project (GGIP) was launched by TotalEnergies in 2023 as a four-in-one project that would comprise of the recovery of has that has been flared at three oil fields in the south of Iraq that would supply electricity to power plants. Additionally, the project will include the construction of a 1 GW solar farm, a seawater treatment plant and the redevelopment of the Ratawi Oil Field. The ArtwaiGas25 project has a unique design that could potentially be replicated across other oil fields in Iraq, leading to a greater national production. Furthermore, the project is expected to open up 160 direct and indirect jobs for citizens during construction and 30 jobs once operational.

More details on the TotalEnergies ArtawiGas25 project in Iraq

The ArtawiGas25 project is expected to process 50 million cubic feet per day of gas previously flared once operational. This will supply the country’s power plants and provide approximately 200,000 households with electricity in the Basra region. Once the field is operational and the large-scale gas processing plant is operational, the power plants will produce up to 1.5 GW of electricity.

“We are very pleased to launch the ArtawiGas25 project: it will give the Iragi people a tangible insight into the benefits of the GGIP, which will provide more energy with less emissions. Through this project, TotalEnergies is demonstrating its capacity to deliver valuable and fast-track solutions in accordance with the government’s expectations and the country’s electricity needs,” said Julien Pouget, Senior Vice President Middle East & North Africa, Exploration & Production at TotalEnergies.
