The project also covers rolling stock modernization. A total of 39 train units will undergo refurbishment to meet current passenger expectations. This includes upgrading traction systems and installing modern features such as CCTV and onboard Wi-Fi.

Meanwhile, interior refurbishment will deliver improved seating, lighting, and passenger information systems. Therefore, commuters will experience a significantly enhanced travel environment.

Upgrade Financing and Procurement Strategy

Cairo Metro Line 2 Upgrade benefits from strong financial backing from international institutions. Notably, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank are supporting the program.

The total project cost exceeds €600 million, equivalent to approximately $650 million. As a result, the upgrade represents one of the most significant metro rehabilitation investments in Egypt.

The procurement process follows a structured prequalification stage. Subsequently, shortlisted bidders will proceed to the tender phase. This approach ensures that only technically capable contractors compete for the project.

In parallel, a separate contract covers rolling stock upgrades, with Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles playing a key role. This coordination ensures seamless integration between infrastructure and train systems.
