NextStar Energy and LG officially open Canada's first and only commercial-scale battery manufacturing plant in Windsor

South Korea’s LG Energy Solution has marked a major milestone in North America’s clean-energy supply chain with the grand opening of the NextStar Energy battery manufacturing plant in Windsor, Ontario. The project, originally developed as a joint venture between LG Energy Solution and Stellantis, is the first commercial-scale EV battery cell manufacturing plant in Canada. It now positions the country as a key hub for advanced battery manufacturing and electrification technologies.

NextStar Energy battery manufacturing plant in Windsor, Ontario is backed by more than CAD 5 billion in investment. It spans 4.23 million square feet and has already produced over one million battery cells since initial production began in November 2025.

The facility is expected to supply battery cells for electric vehicles and emerging energy-storage applications such as grid storage and AI-driven data center infrastructure. Another battery manufacturing plant in Canada that would be welcoming production and supply this year is EcoPro’s $1.2 billion battery plant in Quebec that was halted in 2025 majorly due to tariffs among other reasons.

Importance of the first and only commercial-scale battery manufacturing plant in Canada by NextStar Energy and LG

The official launch of the NextStar Energy facility highlights the rapid growth of North America’s EV battery manufacturing ecosystem. This is especially, being driven by increasing demand for electric vehicles and grid-scale energy storage.

Additionally, by establishing the first commercial-scale battery cell plant in Canada, LG Energy Solution is making the Windsor manufacturing site a cornerstone of the country’s advanced manufacturing sector and a key supplier to the North American EV market.

The project is also seen as a means to strengthen Canada-South Korea industrial collaboration. This is, of course, while supporting the electrification of transportation and expansion of energy-storage technologies across North America.
